Book Review: The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles

Hey everyone! Just wanted to give you guys a quick update on how my reviews are going to work from here on out. I m formatting them way differently! I won't be doing my typical breakdown of a book by plot, characters and thoughts overall anymore. I will be switching it up a bit! But, that leads me to my first question. I re-wrote my review for The Dark Beneath The Ice by Amelinda Berube in my new format, and was wondering if I should post the updated version? Let me know if you want to see it!

The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles, Published  1/31/17 by Bloomsbury Publishing, recommended reading age: 14+/Grade 9+

Publisher Description:

When their worlds collide, X and Zoe are pushed to the edge of everything in this much-buzzed-about tour de force fantasy from Entertainment Weekly veteran Jeff Giles.

For the perfect love, what would you be willing to lose?

It's been a shattering year for seventeen-year-old Zoe, who's still reeling from her father's shocking death in a caving accident and her neighbors' mysterious disappearance from their own home. Then on a terrifying subzero, blizzardy night in Montana, she and her brother are brutally attacked in the woods--only to be rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter they call X.

X is no ordinary bounty hunter. He is from a hell called the Lowlands, sent to claim the soul of Zoe's evil attacker and others like him. X is forbidden from revealing himself to anyone other than his prey, but he casts aside the Lowlands' rules for Zoe. As they learn more about their colliding worlds, they begin to question the past, their fate, and their future. But escaping the Lowlands and the ties that bind X might mean the ultimate sacrifice for them both.

Gripping and full of heart, this epic start to a new series will bring readers right to the edge of everything.

My Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had all the right amounts of funny, suspense, anger, and knowledge about random things (every character needs a hobby! Zoe's is caving and collecting statues). Right from the start, you're hooked! I got halfway through the book before I realized it1 Normally I am not a big fan of insta-love, but I feel like this was done right. X had never experienced it so it kinda makes sense that one of the first mortal girls he meets he falls in love with. Zoe was a regular teenager so obviously she knew what it was to be in love but I doubt she has ever experienced the real thing like she does with X. I loved Zoe's relationships with her family and friends as well. I loved Val and Dallas's characters but I think my favorite relationship was with Zoe's brother, Jonah. It was very heartwarming and sweet. Jeff Giles can write some fantastic relationships.
I thought the overall plot of the book was good, it was a very fast paced book to read. I hope we get to learn more about the Lowlands and Banger & Ripper in the next book. I also hope we get to flesh out more of Zoe's relationship with her mom and with Dallas & Val, because when they interacted was some of my favorite parts. (Have I said the word "relationship" enough yet? I'm trying to hit a quota 😂)
One of my least favorite parts was whenever Stan was there, When Zoe saw **** (spoilers!) and when she was caving in the silver teardrop by herself. It made me feel claustrophobic just reading it! (And the added description of the spiders made my arachnophobia and trypophobia act up 😨😩)
On the other hand, one of my favorite parts was when Zoe and Banger were talking and when X was staying with Zoe's family. It just made my heart happy.

My official rating: 3.5/4 (I can't decide) stars
