Book Review- Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I am going to start this off by saying I don't think I have the words to accurately describe this book and what it's about/how it feels to read it. It's mind-blowing, fast paced, action packed and awesome. The only way to truly know what it's like is to read it.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes. MY THOUGHTS ON: CHARACTERS
Kady Grant is beyond intelligent. A wizard with electronics and great with hacking, she knows her way around the electronic world. She is fierce and small for her age, but she has an attitude and bright pink hair to make up for it. Don't underestimate her.
Ezra Mason is a jock turned fighter pilot. With just his father and Kady left, he didn't think things could get much worse than breaking up with her this morning. Then his planet was invaded, his father killed, and then he got shot. So he was wrong.
AIDEN is an AI (artificial intelligence) on the warship Alexander. During the escape from the Assault on Kerenza, the ship was damaged to the point where the AI was offline. But then it come back online and nukes the Copernicus. AIDEN has gone rogue.

MY THOUGHTS ON: PLOT
This book is so action packed that it's hard to keep up. It takes place over the curse of about a little under a year, but it feels like only a few weeks. It starts on Kerenza, takes place on the Hypatia and Alexander, then just the Hypatia, and goes down the list of tragic and exciting events one by one. Planetary invasion.
Rogue AI.
Mass Killings.
Highly contagious and Highly lethal plague.
Saving the last survivors from said events.
It is so enthralling. My heart was racing, I was sweating like I was actually there, my fingers were numb from poor circulation since all I was doing for hours on end was holding the book and turning pages. I hadn't eaten or used the bathroom of spoken to anyone for about a day, it was so mesmerizing. I loved it. It's not often you find a world that captures your attention so thoroughly.

MY THOUGHTS ON: RANDOM THINGS THAT DON'T FIT INTO ONE CATEGORY
I love the way this book was formatted. It was so unique. I wish more books were like this, but if they were, then this book wouldn't be so unique. Maybe this series can start a trend. But seriously, I loved reading from the security videos that were translated, files, emails, loud speakers, journal entries, etc. My favorite part to read though was the IMs between the characters. Conversations are always my favorite, but seeing the flawed grammar and abbreviations in texts was really cool to me because you never see sloppy writing (for lack of a better term. Don't get me wrong, the authors were not sloppy.) in books.

MY OVERALL REVIEW: 4/5 STARS

NOTES:
1. ILLUMINAE AND GEMINA ARE BOTH ON CLEARANCE FOR THE AMAZON KINDLE FOR THE NEXT 4 DAYS.
2. These books are 10x better read as a book than on the kindle. The formatting is super wonky on the kindle.
