These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

This book was perfectly cheesy and entertaining. I enjoyed it, but I knew when things were going to happen. There were also times where I felt like I got whiplash from how unexpected something was. I can't wait to read the other books in the trilogy.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
Luxury spaceliner Icarus suddenly plummets from hyperspace into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive – alone. Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a cynical war hero. Both journey across the eerie deserted terrain for help. Everything changes when they uncover the truth.

MY THOUGHTS ON: CHARACTERS
Right away you can tell who the love interests are. You can also tell what their personalities are. Based off of what you are able to gather from the first two chapters, you know how the characters personal arc will go. Now that's not a bad thing ,but you do know what you're walking into within the first few pages if you really think about it.
Taver Merendsen is a famous war hero. Tall, brooding and calculating with a poor upbringing and  dark hair. The stereotypical main character/love interest. There are some aspects of him though that you don't expect, like his love of writing poetry. He cares about his duty as a Major and soldier to protect the citizens of the Icarus and his platoon. His passion for helping people leads him to Lilac.
Lilac LaRoux is the only child and daughter of the richest man in the universe. The stereotypical rich girl who thinks she is better than others, is a full on diva and loves dresses and shoes like no other. Unlikable and naive in the beginning, she grows into the likable and down to earth girl. And like Tarver, there is a side to her you don't expect. She is very smart when it comes to hyperspeed travel, mechanical systems and wiring. You learn that she really cares out people. And as they spend time on the abandoned planet, she learns to take care of herself and survive.
Lilac and Tarver have a dynamic like most YA love interests. As soon as they meet on page you know they will end up together. They bicker, push each others buttons and call each other names. They also learn to trust each other, talking about family and life before all of this happened, what they want in the future, and if there is room in their own lives for one another afterwards.

MY THOUGHTS ON: PLOT
I thought this book reminded me of The Hunger Games. Two teenagers in a foreign landscape who don't trust each other learn to trust each other in order to survive, fall in love, try to fight the system, ETC. You get the gist. But that doesn't mean it's bad. I loved The Hunger Games. I think Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner did a fantastic job of using that idea and plot to twist and shape it to their own style. I had fun reading it.
