Book Review: Unearthed by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

I have been in such a science fiction mood. This book really worked. It felt short, but it felt the right length at the same time. Unearthed is a treasure hunting-new planet exploration-teen romance story. It was also a little bit cheesy but so much better than These Broken Stars. I think it will take them a second to get their footing then they will hit the ground running with this series. I so excited to see what will happen in the second book.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.

For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study... as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first. Mia and Jules' different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.

In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race's secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race... MY THOUGHTS ON: CHARACTERS
Amelia Radcliffe is on a mission to buy back her sister. She is quick, cunning and smart but at the same time gentle and homesick. Her only goal is to find a piece of ancient alien artifact to earn money for her sister's life. I really enjoyed how smart she was in the book. Jules is supposed to be the smarty pants know-it-all, but Amelia takes him by surprise multiple time because while he is architecturally smart, she is math and science smart. They go together perfectly.
Jules Addison is on a mission to prove his father isn't crazy and to become one of the first people to explore and discover an ancient civilization. It cost him his family, and he isn't about to let that sacrifice go to waste.

MY THOUGHTS ON: PLOT
The book starts off with Jules saving Amelia from thugs trying to steal her supplies. Then they go on the run together. As an unofficial partnership forms between them, they get closer to finding what they're both looking for. Proof of ancient life. Alien artifacts. Hope. But first they have to survive this planet and the other scavers. It was a good plot. I wish that the we as readers could've gotten to explore the temple a bit more since the book was advertised as a Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft in space but there seemed to be more space than temple exploring. I also really enjoyed how the book ended. I felt like I could see it coming but I still liked it. I can't wait to see what Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner do with such a big opening. I feel as if the ending gave more options for a different climate in the next book. New bad guys, new terrain, and a new "map" per se.

MY OVERALL RATING: 3.5/5 STARS
